Counselling With A Nurse Psychotherapist (Qualifying)

Nurse psychotherapy brings together the clinical understanding of nursing with the relational and psychological work of psychotherapy. In a nutshell, I am a master's prepared registered nurse with additional training to practice psychotherapy.

As a nurse psychotherapist (qualifying), I look at the whole picture of you. This includes not only what you're going through physically, but what you're going through emotionally, as well as what has happened in your life, what you’re carrying now, and how those pieces may be connected. My nursing background means I’m also comfortable with medical language and am aware of the challenges that can come with navigating our health-care system. If health or illness is part of what brings you to counselling, this means you don’t necessarily have to translate the medical side of your experience before we can talk about what it has meant for you and your life.

Our work is more than simply talking about what’s happening in your life. I incorporate evidence-based strategies, including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness, alongside other therapeutic approaches based on what makes sense for you and your needs. We might look at patterns in thoughts and behaviours, build skills for managing difficult emotions, find practical ways of coping, or work on responding differently to situations that feel overwhelming or stuck. My nursing lens continues to inform this work by considering the connection between physical health, emotional well-being, relationships, environment, and the realities of everyday life. The goal isn’t to apply a formula, but to find approaches that are useful and realistic for you.
